When I was a child through my teens, I studied with Miriam Lanova whose studio was the block above Union Street in the old Sherman-Clay Mansion. On Saturdays, she and her husband, John, (then SF Symphony's French Horn first chair) would take all of us students to see the ballet movies shown at the Palace of Legion d'Honeur; we would all sit in the dark theatre with tears rolling down our cheeks. Most were British films, and of course the most influencial was "The Red Shoes."

Hello Jill, Sandra Woodall has designed the costumes and sets for many ballets in SF Ballet's repertory. Upcoming ballets featuring her work include the one pictured above (Possokhov's Diving into the Lilacs) and Possokhov's Classical Symphony, which will have its world premiere in April on Program 7. Messages to Ms. Woodall may be directed to sfbmail@sfballet.info.

Hello, I had the great fortune of meeting Sandra Woodall, set and costume designer, on the BART train yesterday. She mentioned having designed the costumes for an upcoming S.F. ballet, but I can't recall which one. I think she said it was in May of this year. Is there any way I can find out which upcoming ballet she was involved with? I would love to attend. I was also trying to find an email for her, to let her know how nice it was to speak with her, but wasn't able to locate one. I apologize if this isn't the appropriate forum to ask these questions, but would appreciate any information you might have. Thank you.

I am a huge fan of Kip Winger's work...he's an amazing composer, artist, musician and, being a dancer myself, I am really looking forward to seeing this ballet...it is the ultimate culmination of dance and music for me. Kip Winger, Christopher Wheeldon and the SFB Dancers...I'm sure it will breathtakingly beautiful!

Pascal,

We balletomanes were thrilled to see (and hear!)Matisse at Tuesday night's Season Kick-Off. I very much enjoyed your insight on performing the role of Petrouchka - thanks for sharing. Lots of luck and good health to you this coming season.
