I’m Clara Blanco and this is the first time I’ve ever blogged. To introduce myself, I’m from Spain and have been living in SF since I was 16 years old. After several years of training in Spain, I entered the Prix de Lausanne and won a scholarship to the SF Ballet School; that’s how I ended up in this company, on the other side of the world from home. Being so far away from Spain has definitely made things more interesting!

When I came here, the culture shock was huge, but because I was young it didn’t take long for me to adapt. In a way, both countries are my home because I’ve lived half of my life in each one. As I grow older, I’m more conscientious of how far away I am from my family. I think it’s much harder for my parents since I’m the only child. Thank god for Skype because you can see each other; it really makes a difference. After years in the school I joined the company at the age of 17. Something I love about the city is going to the Opera and Symphony. I began going to concerts with my parents when I was five years old; it’s something I’ve always really enjoyed. I love that I can keep going here (I was just at the Symphony last night). I feel that the city is both small and big at the same time. It’s very easy to move around; not as crazy at NYC or Madrid, with a little bit of a European feel to it.
