Hello, I am Jennifer Peterian and I manage ticket services and the box office for San Francisco Ballet. The Nutcracker season—which is right around the corner—is my favorite time at the ballet! There is a sense of joy that comes from walking through the beautifully decorated Opera House and seeing the wonder in the eyes of the children who are all decked out in their fancy holiday dresses and mini suits and ties.

The first decision to make is to determine what performance are you going to attend. The family performances are a lot of fun. You can take pictures with costumed characters in the lobby prior to the show, and the first 500 children get a free gift. There is also complimentary juice and cookies at intermission. I prefer to take my daughter to one of the evening performances; there is something special about the way the city lights up at night and the festive feeling. The orchestra level is a great place for children to sit—you can grab a booster seat before taking your seat and you can be close enough to see the costumes.

Whether you decide to attend a matinee or evening performance I have a few hints to make your experience as enjoyable as possible:

- The most important thing: leave early and allow plenty of time for either Muni, Bart or parking challenges. You can always find something to do in the neighborhood if you have time to spare, and it beats the stress of scrambling and arriving out of breath for the show.

- Know if your child is ready for a live performance. Can they sit still an hour at a time? If so, they are ready to enjoy the magic of Nutcracker.

- Preparation is key: Talk to your child beforehand about theater etiquette. I feel it is very important for a child to know what is expected of them.

Finally, there are some great places to eat around the Opera House. I love Max’s in Opera Plaza, they have something for everyone and it is only 2 blocks from the theater. The Ballet’s website also offers additional suggestions for restaurants in the area.

I hope that you too, are able to experience the magic of Nutcracker this holiday season with your family!
